Name Pronouncing

Names are parts of language that move through time and place, changing with the times and local languages or cultural movements and The Great Vowel Shift in English. Some people are very attached to precise pronunciation of their names, while others marvel at how their name has changed as people travel. As Dr Deondre Smiles said recently on social media:

"I've gotten a lot of questions over the past few years about how to pronounce my Ojibwe name, Niiyokamigaabaw (Stands On Four Earths) — I've recorded a short video explaining how to pronounce it! Enjoy!"
